Statement from NL NDP Leader on Threat of Tariffs

For Immediate Release

January 21, 2025

“The threat of tariffs by the United States on Canadian goods continues to be deeply concerning but we need to be calm, united, and steadfast in our response. We all hoped that President Trump would realize the harm tariffs would cause both our economies, our decades long strong partnership, and the disruption it would cause to critical supply chains, trade deals, and the livelihoods of thousands of workers across our province and country. Obviously, he hasn’t.

“Yesterday, on the morning of the Inauguration, we heard the US would strike a committee to investigate setting tariffs. However, by evening President Trump announced tariffs would be imposed on Canada by February 1st. This is very troubling.

“At a time when we need a strong united response to the tariff threat that hangs over the province’s head, I’m concerned about the rumours of an early election call. The rising cost of living is the greatest concern for Newfoundlanders and Labradorians, and tariffs will hurt people in their pocketbook and put more pressure on businesses.

“In an atmosphere of such uncertainty, it is unacceptable for the Premier to continue to be coy about whether he will be calling an early election. With Trump's tariffs coming into effect, it would be irresponsible to leave the Newfoundland and Labrador government driver's seat vacant.

“An early election would be a dereliction of duty with entire industries in this province under threat, with 50 per cent of our exports going to the United States.

“We ask for a commitment from the Premier that he will respect the fixed date law, focus on protecting our jobs and economy, and put the people of Newfoundland and Labrador above the interests of the Liberal party.

“We need to stand and work together to protect our workers and our economy, not be distracted by political sideshows when people's livelihoods are at stake. This is an issue bigger than partisanship, and people expect us to stand together.”
