NDP MHA for Labrador West Jordan Brown is optimistic about the potential for growth in the mining sector in Labrador West, known for its rich natural resources and important role in Newfoundland and Labrador’s economy.
As the industry thrives, MHA Brown is calling on the provincial government to ensure that new mines prioritize the hiring of local workers.
“Labrador West has long been the backbone of our province's mining industry, and the recent growth is a testament to the hard work of our community,” said Brown. “However, we must remain vigilant. Some new mines would like to rely on fly-in-fly-out (FIFO) workers. FIFO will have grave social and economic consequences.”
MHA Brown’s comments come from concerns from residents about FIFO. He emphasizes the importance of proactive measures to safeguard the livelihoods of workers and the future of mining operations in Labrador West.
“Our workers are the heart of Labrador West’s success, and it’s our duty to ensure they are protected,” Brown continued. “We need a government that is prepared to stand up for workers.”
He reiterated his commitment to advocating for the rights and interests of the workers in Labrador City and Wabush.
“Let’s continue to build on our successes. Together, we can secure a prosperous future for Labrador West and all of Newfoundland and Labrador.”
