“While Thanksgiving is traditionally a time of gratitude, reflection, we know that this holiday comes at a challenging time for countless families across Newfoundland and Labrador. Many are struggling more than ever to make ends meet, and food banks are facing unprecedented demand, with shelves growing bare more often than not.
“This reality weighs heavily on all of us. The spirit of Thanksgiving reminds us of the importance of community and caring for one another, especially during times of hardship. It’s a reminder that we must not turn away from the struggles around us but stand together and support those in need. Thank you to foodbanks and charitable organisations who continue to provide food and other necessities to people and families struggling to afford basic needs. Thank you to the many individuals who support these organisations through their donations of money, food, and volunteer time.
“But beyond that, we must continue to push for the changes needed to build a better future for everyone in this province. We must continue to demand policies that address the root causes of poverty, inequality, and food insecurity. Our fight for fair wages, affordable housing, and better social supports is more important now than ever. Together, we can continue to be a voice for those who are unheard and ensure no one is left behind.
“This is why the NL NDP will continue to advocate for policies to address the cost of living crisis. Removing the HST off all forms of home heating fuel to help with the rising cost, a universal school lunch program for all students from K-12, and the implementation of rent controls so no one has to worry about facing eviction or unfair rent increases, are examples.
“Newfoundlanders and Labradorians should be able to feel thankful throughout the year. My colleague, MHA Jordan Brown, and I are committed to continuing raising and advocating for solutions for you.”
