“Pride Month is recognized around the world every June, marking the anniversary of the 1969 Stonewall Riots, a historic turning point in the fight for 2SLGBTQIA+ rights. While global celebrations take place in June, here in Newfoundland and Labrador, Pride is celebrated throughout July and across the summer in communities province wide.

“The NL NDP stands in unwavering solidarity with the 2SLGBTQIA+ community. Pride is a time to celebrate love, identity, and progress, but this year, more than ever, it’s also a time to recommit to fighting back against hate.

“We are deeply concerned by the growing rise in homophobia and transphobia, whether it’s coming from across the border, from elsewhere in Canada, or right here at home. Hate has no place in Newfoundland and Labrador. We must work together to build a province where everyone, especially our youth, can live, learn, and thrive without fear. That starts with ensuring our classrooms and public spaces are safe, inclusive, and supportive for all.

“Transgender people, in particular, continue to face unacceptable levels of discrimination and violence. Pride celebrations should never be overshadowed by fear, but in recent years, rising hate have made that more difficult. We must speak out. We must act.

“True equality means more than tolerance—it means full inclusion, real safety, and genuine respect. Pride is a celebration of our shared humanity. It’s a time to embrace and uplift our family members, friends, and neighbours for who they are. It’s about standing together in acceptance, and honouring the diversity that makes our communities stronger, more compassionate, and more just.

“This July, as Pride flags are raised across the province, the NL NDP proudly celebrates the victories won by the 2SLGBTQIA+ community. And we renew our commitment to fighting by your side for justice, for dignity, and for a future free from hate.”
