As the Spring session of the House of Assembly approaches, NL NDP Leader Jim Dinn (St. John’s Centre) wants government to keep its promises to the people of the province, even as they deal with the pressures of threatened trade tariffs and other uncertainties caused by the US President. Dinn’s focus remains on retaining healthcare workers, tackling the housing crisis, and addressing the cost-of-living crisis.
“People are slipping through the cracks, struggling under multiple crises while government refuses to listen,” said Dinn. “We need real solutions, not short-term band-aid measures. It’s time to think beyond election cycles and commit to lasting change. We need concrete action plans, and that is exactly what the NDP is focused on.
“When it comes to housing, we need a plan to expand non-market, community-based options and implement rental controls to protect renters, including seniors on fixed incomes, from exorbitant rent increases or losing their homes,” said Dinn.
“The cost of living continues to force people to make impossible choices, whether to heat their homes, put food on the table, or afford essential medications. We will continue to press the Premier on when he will join the federal pharmacare plan, which would provide much-needed relief to so many in this province,” he continued. “We will also keep pushing for the removal of HST on all forms of home heating, putting more money back in people's pockets.
“Fixing our healthcare system is critical. That means listening to healthcare workers and implementing a human resources plan that addresses work-life balance. It also means ensuring seniors can truly age at home by bringing home care under the public system.
“With the threat of tariffs looming and people feeling the strain of global challenges, the government must focus on making life easier for everyone in this province. This is our future, and we must fight for it.”
