Statement from MHA Jordan Brown on Labrador Flag Day

For Immediate Release

March 31, 2025

"Today, we proudly celebrate 51 years of the Labrador flag, a symbol of the heart and soul of the Big Land. The Labrador Flag is more than just a banner; it is a testament to our identity, our resilience, and our rich history. For Labradorians, this flag represents the enduring spirit of a people who have always stood strong and united.

"Labrador is a place defined by diversity, opportunity, and an unbreakable passion for community. Michael Martin, the creator of the Labrador flag, captured this essence perfectly. Along with his wife and the Labrador Brotherhood, Martin symbolized what it truly means to be a Labradorian. It is this spirit that continues to soar on the flag, reminding us of our deep connection to this land and to each other.

"While we celebrate the Labrador flag and all it represents, we also recognize that the fight for its rightful place in this province is far from over. In 2014, when the provincial government claimed that the provincial flag was enough to represent us, I stood with a group of proud Labradorians on our border with Quebec and hoisted the Labrador flag high. This moment marked a powerful affirmation of both the unity between the Big Land and the Island, and the distinct identity that sets us apart.

"But today, we also reflect on the work that remains to ensure Labrador is treated fairly and justly. From healthcare access to mental health and addictions services, Labradorians know all too well the struggles we face. We continue to fight for adequate healthcare services that are not only accessible but also equitable. Our people should not have to sacrifice so much simply to access basic care. This must change.

"We are not a mining camp. While we take pride in the industries that sustain our economy, it is crucial that we also demand that our communities are given the opportunity to thrive. This means real investments in housing, rent controls, and the infrastructure our communities need to grow and prosper. We need government to listen, to stop cutting us short, and to ensure that Labradorians have what we deserve: a future that is as vibrant and strong as the land we call home.

"Labrador is my home, and it always will be. We must make sure that Labrador is a place where anyone who wants to work, raise a family, or experience our untamed beauty can do so with pride and opportunity. Today, and every day, I commit myself to fighting for a stronger, fairer Labrador—a Labrador that is respected, heard, and seen for what it truly is."
