For Immediate Release

April 2, 2025

Today, NL NDP Leader Jim Dinn (St. John’s Centre) wrote the Acting Minister of Housing, along with the CEO of NL Housing, about the number of NL Housing units left unrepaired in the Livingstone Street area after another fire last week claimed more empty units.

Dinn says enough is enough and demands the Department of Housing hire the required NLHC tradespeople to carry out the necessary maintenance, repairs, and renovations on all occupied and vacant NLHC units.

“NLHC is looking more like slum landlord. Neglect on the part of the corporation is negatively affecting the mental health and well-being of tenants and endangering the health, well-being, and lives of the people in the surrounding neighbourhood,” Dinn wrote.

With the housing crisis at an all time high, Dinn says that government cannot continue to let these units deteriorate and calls for action.

“The provincial budget will be delivered on April 9. I urge the Department of Housing and the Provincial Government to develop a plan to:

1.    Repair and renovate all vacant NLHC units and have them ready to be occupied within a year.

2.    Repair, renovate, and carry out all maintenance on occupied units within 18 months.

3.    Fund the renovations, repairs, and maintenance identified in the above recommendations.

4.    Hire the staff necessary to carry out the repairs, renovations, and maintenance.

5.    Provide 24/7 security to ensure fires do not break out in vacant units.

6.    Provide the necessary supports to help people stay housed.

7.    Meet with residents to explain the plan and hear their concerns.

8.    Commit to a space for the community centre for the neighbourhood.”
