NDP MHA Jordan Brown (Labrador West) slammed government today for neglecting the housing crisis in the district, calling for supports and resources for municipalities to entice new construction, and to stop waiting on the Federal government for answers.

Brown highlights how residents of Labrador West are disappointed by the continued lack of action from this government to support the construction of housing in the district. He says new NL Housing Corporation (NLHC) units are welcome, but a far cry from solving the 0% vacancy in housing.

“With only 4 units to be built for NLHC, 2 of which are to replace units that burned, and only a meaningless statement in the budget with no money committed for seniors housing, I ask the minister, will they finally stop waiting on the federal liberal government and start work on the 40 units this construction season?”

Brown continued by describing the impacts of 0% vacancy in housing in the region, pointing out that with the influx of work coming into the district in the coming years with the Churchills Falls MOU, housing must be available.

“Yesterday the minister responsible for housing said he believed in the private market to get housing built. Well, no rental units have been built in Lab West since 2014. REITs own large patches of land that have gone undeveloped for a decade,” said Brown.”

He said that there are newly hired public servants moving to the district for work, but they may have to leave the position due to being unable to secure housing. Brown says government needs to work with municipalities so resources are in place and construction can begin.

“I ask the minister, when will he give the support and resources that the municipalities have been asking for to get housing development off the ground?”
