NL NDP Leader Jim Dinn (St. John’s Centre) is urging the Premier to call the House of Assembly back to allow all members to come together to discuss solutions around tariffs.
Dinn supports the Premier’s round table discussion to deal with incoming tariffs from President Trump, but says a true Team NL approach would also include calling all members to the House of Assembly.
“It is positive to see the Premier is speaking to unions, industry and the business community about the threat of incoming tariffs, it’s important to have everyone at the table,” said Dinn. “If we want to have a Team NL approach, the Premier must call the House of Assembly back so that all elected members who represent the people of the province can openly discuss the worries and issues in their districts around tariffs.”
Dinn also highlights the need to include social community groups at the table, stating that these tariffs will also hurt those in the province who are already struggling to get by. The Premier must invite these groups to the discussion to help protect Newfoundlanders and Labradorians.
“We know that many people in this province are living paycheque to paycheque, and any changes to our country’s trade deals could push people over the edge. I think of seniors on fixed incomes who already struggle to afford their groceries and medicine,” said Dinn. “I think a very important piece of this conversation is missing from main discussions. These groups will be imperative to help ease the impact on everyday people.”
Dinn concluded by urging Premier Furey to take swift and decisive action. “The people of this province deserve a government that will fight for them during this crisis. With the NL NDP, your fight is our fight.”
