Statement from NL NDP Leader on New MOU Oversight Panel

For Immediate Release

January 9, 2025

NL NDP Leader Jim Dinn (St. John’s Centre), along with MHA Jordan Brown (Labrador West), heard public concerns about this potentially decades-long power deal, and the demands for transparent, arms-length oversight of the Churchill Falls Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) as government works towards a final agreement with Quebec.

The NDP was successful in obtaining concessions from the Liberal government for an independent review of the MOU.

On Tuesday, Dinn sent a letter to the Premier asking for an independent review. The letter detailed what the NDP expected in that review, highlighting the absolute need for an oversight committee to be a transparent and arm’s length from government.

Dinn emphasized that when the MOU was signed on December 12, government was not in favour of independent oversight.

"As people read the details in the MOU they began to get concerned," Dinn said. "Many people across the province have been weighing in. From our town hall last week, we knew that people felt that it was rushed, and that details were missing.

“Thanks to this input, the NDP developed the proposal that we put the government. I am pleased that government has listened and has agreed to establish arm’s length oversight.

We expect the Premier to act immediately if any issues are found by the independent committee. We simply cannot afford to be locked into another 50 year bad deal. We must protect the people of the province and do what is best for the future.”
