For Immediate Release
June 13, 2024
NDP Leader, Jim Dinn (St. John’s Centre) provided the following statement on the Auditor General’s Performance Audit of OilCo:
It is difficult to read the latest performance audit about unchecked spending when constituents are suffering from the high cost of living. Daily, people are making choices between food, housing and medicine. To know that such waste is being allowed to happen in the Department of Industry, Energy and Technology – like spending $10,000 for business class upgrades for air travel - is unconscionable. Where is the oversight of Oil Co?
I repeat the comments I made on June 4th when the Auditor General released the Outstanding Performance Audit Recommendations Report: “Core failings of the Liberal government have been identified by the Auditor General years ago and are willfully ignored.” Successive governments cannot seem to get a handle on this situation or don’t want to.
The people of Newfoundland and Labrador should not have to continue to pay for lack of government oversight. Why do we have to wait for the Auditor General to investigate and release reports? Ministers must ensure that their departments are accountable. Instead, the Liberals choose to ignore policy and procedures as if the rules don’t apply to them.
How many times do we call on the Liberals to make better choices only to hear “Where are we going to get the money, Jim?” However, when government decides to pad the pockets of their buddies by leasing a donor’s hotel for millions of dollars – the money is always there.
