Statement from Jim Dinn Marking International Pride Month

For Immediate Release

31 May, 2024

Jim Dinn (St. John’s Centre), Leader of Newfoundland and Labrador’s NDP, issued the following statement marking the start of International Pride Month and the Provincial Pride Season.

“Today at the Confederation Building the NDP Caucus is proud to stand in solidarity with the 2SLGBTQIA+ community for the annual Pride flag raising ceremony. This community is a living example of solidarity in the face of rising hate and dedication in the fight for equity in our society.

“The provincial government must do more to ensure the safety of 2SLGBTQIA+ individuals in this province. They must be able to gather safely and celebrate their community throughout the Pride season, and throughout the year. In every corner of our province the community has been alerted by CSIS that the rising hate targeted towards them should cause great concern.

“Last year targeted support the community has received comes from Ottawa. This was only secured after community organizations boycotted the 2024 provincial flag raising demanding more than photo opportunities and bureaucratic hurdles.

“Throughout the Pride season the NDP is calling on allies to step up and stand in solidarity with the 2SLGBTQIA+ community by denouncing hate whenever it presents itself. We must be united in our conviction that Newfoundland and Labrador has no space for hate.

“As festivals and celebrations take place across our province this summer offer your support, join in the celebration, and raise your own Pride flag. This symbol is recognized the world over as a beacon of safety and security for the 2SLGBTQIA+ community. This small gesture will send a message to your neighbours that they are safe, welcome, and you stand alongside them.”
