NDP MHA Jordan Brown (Labrador West) made a statement today on the new Churchill Falls announcement:
“As we anticipate the announcement of a new Churchill Falls agreement, it is essential that this deal be approached with full transparency. The people of Newfoundland and Labrador, especially those of us in Labrador, must be assured that this opportunity will benefit all residents fairly and equitably. The NDP calls for an emergency debate in the House of Assembly in January to ensure that all elected members get to discuss how this deal impacts their districts and understand all aspects of the deal.
“I await to hear how Labrador will benefit from this deal. Labrador continues to be the powerhouse of our province’s energy sector, yet communities here, including the vital mining industry, continue to face challenges accessing reliable electricity. It is unacceptable that while Labrador generates so much energy, its own industries and residents are left underserved. I have long called for additional turbines to be added to Churchill Falls to increase capacity. I hope I hear this in the announcement today.
“This deal must prioritize increasing electricity availability for Labrador, ensuring our mining industry has the power it needs to continue driving economic growth and creating jobs. We cannot afford to overlook this critical sector, which plays a key role in our province’s economy.
“The provincial government has a duty to secure a fair deal—one that acknowledges Labrador's contributions and ensures sustainable development for future generations. Labradorians deserve to see tangible benefits from our resources.
“I wait, along with the rest of the province, to hear what this deal will bring to Newfoundland and Labrador. We have a duty to the people of this province to get this right. We also have a duty to ensure it is done transparently.”
