Residents Sound the Alarm at Labrador West Town Hall on Cost of Living

For Immediate Release

February 24, 2025

Labrador West MHA Jordan Brown hosted a town hall last week to hear directly from residents about the challenges they face amid the cost of living crisis. The discussion highlighted major concerns, including the lack of housing, rising food costs, seniors struggling on fixed incomes, access to healthcare, issues with the Medical Transportation Assistance Program (MTAP), and the impact of fly-in fly-out workers on the community.

“It’s difficult to hear the realities people in our community are facing, but it’s critical to listen and work toward solutions that make their lives easier,” said Brown. “Many of the concerns raised were not surprising, but it’s clear that people are struggling, and our provincial government is not doing enough to address these challenges.”

Brown was joined by NL NDP Leader Jim Dinn, Kim Martin of the Labrador West Status of Women, and Michelene Gray, a housing support worker and Emergency Shelter Supervisor with the Labrador West Housing and Homelessness Coalition.

“It was valuable to hear from community members who are working on the ground every day to address these issues in real time,” said Brown.

“People don’t feel listened to,” he continued. “Time and time again, I fight for more housing support in Labrador West, for MTAP red tape to be cut so Labradorians can access healthcare without unnecessary burdens, and for seniors who fear they’ll soon have to choose between medication and food.

“Labrador is not a mining camp. Government needs to start listening to Labradorians who have been calling for real action before these issues spiral further into crisis. I will continue to fight for the lives Labradorians deserve.”
