Planning for Jobs Must Begin Immediately: Brown

For Immediate Release

January 7, 2025

NL NDP MHA Jordan Brown (Labrador West) is adding his voice to the call from the Newfoundland and Labrador Federation of Labour (NLFL) for detailed planning to begin immediately to prepare workers for the new jobs that will be available due to the Churchill Falls Memorandum of Understanding (MOU).

With the MOU projecting approximately 5,000 direct jobs and 4,500 indirect jobs, Brown says that government must immediately begin working together with workers, employers, and educators to ensure that these jobs will bring benefits to Newfoundlanders and Labradorians.

“As we look to the future of our province, it is imperative for government to start working towards making sure jobs are available for our residents, and that workers are trained and ready to take these jobs,” said Brown. “We need to put our workers first, and that means guaranteeing that the benefits of new projects stay right here in Newfoundland and Labrador. Our communities deserve good, stable jobs that support families and strengthen our local economy.

“We need the government to collaborate closely with skilled trades and post-secondary institutions to ensure that workers in Newfoundland and Labrador can access the training necessary for emerging job opportunities,” said Brown. “Whether it’s the creation of necessary programs, or government funding so that workers can access new training, it is important for us to make sure the path is clear for those looking to avail of these opportunities.

“By working together with our high schools, colleges and trades unions, we can equip our workforce with the tools they need to succeed. This approach not only prepares our people for the future but also keeps the benefits of economic growth within our province, supporting local families and communities.

“We have a powerful workforce in this province, and government is responsible for making sure our workers are prepared and ready to take these jobs.”
