New Liberal Leader must put people’s priorities first: Coffin
NDP Leader Alison Coffin congratulates Premier-Designate Andrew Furey on his election as the new Liberal Party Leader. She says she is hopeful that the priorities of Newfoundlanders and Labradorians will be front and centre for the new Liberal Leader.
“There are many people in this province who are struggling to make ends meet. We had high jobless numbers before COVID-19 and now it’s worse – the worst in the country at 16.5 per cent unemployed. People are worried about where their next pay cheque will come from, and whether that pay cheque will stretch to cover their expenses,” said Coffin. “My priority has always been to fight for their priorities.”
The Liberal government will need support in the House of Assembly to pass a budget prior to September 30.
“I am hopeful that the Liberals will have meaningful and genuine collaboration with the NDP prior to any introduction of a budget,” said Coffin. “The Premier-Designate has promised there will be no fall election. I would respectfully encourage him to get to work to ensure we can collaboratively develop a budget the NDP can support, one that is focused on the people of this province.”
The NDP Caucus looks forward to the work ahead including the opening of the House of Assembly.
