On the anniversary of the Cougar Flight 491 helicopter crash, NL NDP Leader Jim Dinn (St. John’s Centre) says the provincial government to take concrete steps to improve workplace safety and protect workers.
“The tragedy of Cougar Flight 491 remains a stark reminder of the risks many workers face on the job—whether offshore, in mining, construction, or other industries,” said Dinn. “We owe it to those workers, and to the families who have lost loved ones, to take every possible step to improve workplace safety.”
Dinn is urging the government to follow through on key recommendations from the Health Accord, including the establishment of an Occupational Health and Safety (OHS) Clinic. He is also calling for the collection and public reporting of employer safety records to ensure accountability and transparency in workplace safety.
“Workers deserve to know that their safety is a priority and that employers are being held accountable for the well-being of those they employ,” said Dinn. “The government has a responsibility to act, not just talk, when it comes to protecting workers.”
The NDP remains a strong voice for workplace safety. In the last year, caucus members have been vocal advocates on a range of issues, including protections for OHS employees, offshore helicopter safety, the Labrador West silica dust study, and more.
“It’s time for action,” Dinn said. “We must honour the memory of those lost in the Cougar Flight 491 tragedy, and all workplace accidents, by strengthening protections for all workers in Newfoundland and Labrador.”
