NL NDP Leader Jim Dinn (St. John’s Centre) is appalled that the Liberal government chose to shut down the House of Assembly just seven days into the Spring session. Dinn says this move makes it clear that government is more focused on its own agenda than on the crises facing the people of this province.
Dinn questions the decision, noting that Newfoundlanders and Labradorians continue to face crises in housing, healthcare, and the cost of living. He says this move proves the government doesn’t want to be held accountable for its failures in addressing these urgent issues.
“The lack of accessible housing. The barriers to healthcare and mental health care across the province. The ever-changing threats of tariffs. The cost of living crisis. Skyrocketing electricity rates. I could go on,” said Dinn. “Yet, in the face of all this undue hardship, this government chooses to close the House of Assembly early. Really?”
Dinn says the Liberal government is more concerned about their own agenda, rather than the agenda of the people of the province.
“The House of Assembly is where elected members stand up and fight for their constituents. It’s where we highlight the realities residents are facing and push the government to address gaps in the system,' said Dinn. 'Shutting it down early is shameful—especially with a budget on the way.
“I hope this early closure doesn’t lead to a rushed budget debate. That’s exactly what happened in 2019 after I was elected, and the people of this province deserve far better.”
