Jordan Brown, MHA for Labrador West, is responding to government’s expression of interest for the Julienne Lake Deposit, saying that government must first invest in the district for the workers coming.
Brown says that new projects and investments from companies into the field are great, but government continues to fail the residents and workers of Labrador West when it comes to addressing the lack of services.
"We welcome the expansion of Labrador West’s proven resources, like the Julienne Lake Deposit, but we cannot forget the people that live in Labrador West and those who want to move to the district to work on these projects,” said Brown. “We haven't seen any meaningful investment in the people of Labrador West and their needs, just the exploitation of the resources and this Liberal government’s push to turn Labrador West into nothing more then a mining camp.
“Since being elected, I have continuously talked about the need for increased housing stock so that people coming to work can lay down roots. I have talked about access to health care, especially mental health care supports, so that families here don’t have to worry about getting sick or getting an injury, and instead have the peace of mind that someone will be able to help them.
“A fly in, fly out model should not be the only option for workers. They should be able to bring their families here, to work and support the economy and community of Labrador West. They should be able to make it their home. But government continuously ignores the needs of Labrador West, making living in the district increasingly harder.
“Government has said time and time again that our resources are crucial and important to our economy, so when will they treat Labrador West with the same care?”
