Jim Dinn (St. John’s Centre), Leader of Newfoundland and Labrador’s NDP says the findings of the latest report by the Auditor General shows that the Government is falling down on the job and failing to improve peoples’ lives in this province.
“Like provincial governments before them, this Liberal Government is picking a fight with Ottawa to distract from the crises in health care, housing, education, and affordability and now we know why. Core failings of the Liberal government have been identified by the Auditor General years ago and are willfully ignored,” said Dinn. “If anyone was wondering why there doesn’t seem to be signs of improvement in the province, look no further than the 69 outstanding recommendations the Liberals have chosen to ignore. Some of which have been on the books for eight years.”
The recommendations outline improvements to road ambulance services, the provincial home support program, and government preparedness for changing demographics. Dinn says the Liberal’s haven’t been focused on improving the lives of the province’s most vulnerable and there inaction is underscored by this latest report.
“If Government had acted on these recommendations it could have given them the data to know that seniors weren’t able to access home supports and where gaps in the system existed,” said Dinn. “This government is being willfully ignorant to the realities people are facing, and it’s time that they started governing instead of prioritizing lucrative contracts for their party supporters.”
