NDP MHA Jordan Brown (Labrador West) wants to know what government is doing to prepare for the possibility of tariffs on goods coming from the province.
Brown says businesses are worried about the threat of imposed tariffs, especially those who do the majority of their trade across the boarder. If the tariffs do go ahead, there would be a huge impact on businesses in Labrador West, and throughout the province.
“What steps is your government taking to help businesses navigate these challenges, and are there any specific strategies in place to mitigate the impact of these tariffs on our economy?” Brown asked.
Brown highlighted the importance of government initiatives to expand trade opportunities to other markets. This would give businesses the chance to broaden their sales and begin to trade in new markets, offsetting some of the disruption should the U.S. implement the 25% tariffs on Canadian goods entering the US.
Brown asked the Minister, “What steps are being taken to help Newfoundland and Labrador businesses expand their trade opportunities in European markets? Are there any initiatives in place to help companies access new international markets to reduce their reliance on the U.S. market?”
Brown stresses that while it is important to stay calm and not panic about the threat of tariffs from President-elect Trump, it is imperative to plan and start working on alternative solutions.
