NDP MHA Jordan Brown (Labrador West) challenged government on the Medical Travel Assistance Program (MTAP) today. He says work must be done to make applying for the program easier.
Labradorians, especially seniors, face significant challenges when accessing medical services, mostly because most of those services are concentrated on the Northeast Avalon.
Brown says his constituents continue to struggle with demonstrating they meet the requirements for MTAP, as the process is burdensome on both the patients and the doctors who must complete the required forms. Brown asked the Minister responsible, “Will you review the required documentation for applications to the program, and lift some of the burden on seniors?”
Brown adds asking specialists and doctors asking to fill out the required forms eats up precious resources and time for doctors. As we continue to face a health care crisis, Brown says MTAP requirements should be reviewed and the process should not download more responsibilities on doctors and specialists. “Will you immediately remove the requirement for escort letters for seniors?” Brown asked the Minister.
