Brown Questions Government on Labour: November 7th

For Immediate Release

November 7, 2024

MHA Jordan Brown (Labrador West) focused on workers today in the House of Assembly, pressing government on both the need for paid sick days and support for all health care workers.

Brown began by expressing the NDP MHAs’ disappointment that their amendment for the inclusion of up to 10 paid sick days for workers was ruled out of scope of the legislation being debated. The legislation being debated was The Labour Standards Act. Workers are still getting sick and deserve the protection. Brown asked the Premier, “When will this government bring in legislation for paid sick leave?”

CUPE members came together to watch the House of Assembly today, as the NDP Caucus presented a petition on behalf of health care service support workers. Brown calls out the government for their unfair treatment of health care workers. “Government cherry picked bonuses for healthcare support service workers that keep our health care system together. Some of these workers don’t even make a living wage,” Brown says. He asks the Premier, “When is this government going to treat every health care worker with the respect they deserve and give them the wages they deserve?”
