Advocates with the local deaf and hard of hearing community will present a petition to Lorraine Michael, NDP Leader and critic for Education and Early Childhood Development, today at 1 p.m. in the lobby of the Confederation Building.
Todd and Kim Churchill, whose six-year-old son Carter is deaf, started a petition calling on government to undertake a complete assessment of the supports in place for deaf and hard of hearing children.
The Churchills are concerned that deaf and hard of hearing children in the public education system are not receiving equivalent access to quality education due to a lack of resources. They have started a group called Equity for Education of the Deaf in Newfoundland and Labrador.
The Churchills will present the petition to Lorraine Michael. Members of the media are invited to attend.
