Statement on All-Party Committee for a Council for Health Quality & Performance

Updated: Jul 16

For Immediate Release

31 October, 2023

“I am pleased to be the NDP Caucus representative for the All-Party Committee on the Establishment of a Council for Health Quality and Performance. I am cautiously optimistic that the new council will fulfil its role as outlined in the Health Accord.

“My focus will be to ensure that the replacement of the four regional health authorities with the newly established regional health councils that have no authority under the new single provincial health authority will not put Labrador and other rural communities at a disadvantage.

“Through stakeholder consultations and reviewing councils that have been put in place in other jurisdictions, we will determine if the implementation of a Health Quality Council in the province would be a benefit to the people.

“I look forward to the discussions, and being a strong voice to advocate for patients in rural Newfoundland and Labrador that still struggle with inaccessible healthcare. Whether it be access to a physician, or navigating the MTAP program, I hope these discussions in this committee will bring forward solutions to make accessing healthcare, and the quality of healthcare, better for all Newfoundlanders and Labradorians.

“There is much work to be done to improve the quality of healthcare available to people, especially those in rural areas of our province, and I will make sure your concerns are heard and recognized in these conversations.”
