Questions for the Government: Thursday November 2nd, 2023

For Immediate Release

2 November 2023

NDP Leader, Jim Dinn (St. John’s Centre), is publicly publishing the following questions to the Liberal Government after he was notified he will not be able to speak in the House of Assembly.

“While the housing crisis continues across the province, I was not able to ask the following questions to the Liberal Government today in the House of Assembly:”

1. Newfoundlanders and Labradorians want real action on the housing crisis. They want relief from skyrocketing rents. They want investments in affordable housing. They want unhoused people in homes, not on mats on crowded floors. But what do they get? They get a government with no plan but to blame the former government - the conservatives - who only lately seems to have realized there is a housing crisis.

When will this government stand up and do better for the province?

2. The Budget Speech say that 850 new homes will be built in the province.

Speaker, how many of these units will be shelter beds, how many will be rent supplements and how many will be actual Newfoundland and Labrador Housing Units?

3. The Budget Speech say that these 850 new homes will be built with a focus on seniors.

Speaker, how many of these 850 will be actual homes for seniors or will this government count long term care beds as part of their housing stock like the Ford government has in Ontario?
