Our Economic State Improves While People Continue to Struggle

For Immediate Release

August 1, 2024

NL NDP Leader Jim Dinn (St. John’s Centre) is commenting on the economic update today made by the Minister of Finance, saying that just because the provincial economy is doing better, it doesn’t mean people are.

Today in front of media, Finance Minister Siobhan Coady announced that Newfoundland and Labrador’s economy is in better shape now than it was in 2023, However, Dinn questions the timing of the good news when many people in the province are facing a much different reality.

“Strengthening our economy is essential. However, the Minister must understand that her announcement the day before electricity rates are set to increase comes as cold comfort to people who are struggling to make ends meet.

“According to the update, the unemployment rate is the lowest it has been in the province. How much of that is because people have to work two or three minimum wage jobs just to get by? Jobs, which do not even pay a living wage.

“Increasing rental rates are causing seniors and others to fear being homeless. Yet, this Liberal government refuses to implement measures to help those on fixed, low or moderate incomes.

“It’s great to have announcements and updates, but they must address the realities people in our province are living.”
