THE NL NDP WILL ALWAYS STAND UP FOR HUMAN RIGHTS: COFFIN

NL NDP Leader Alison Coffin issued the following statement today:

“When our basic human rights are undermined, I believe that each one of us has a responsibility to act in the face of discrimination, homophobia, sexism and xenophobia.

We must act in our daily lives to uphold the rights that protect us all.

Following the disturbing report about the PC candidate for Cartwright-L’Anse au Clair, Michael Normore, I felt compelled to speak up.

It was reported that Mr. Normore has expressed opposition to abortion rights, same-sex marriage, and immigration. This is in complete violation of our basic human rights covered by the Newfoundland and Labrador Human Rights Code.

He was vetted and approved by the PCs. It is unacceptable that this candidate was still allowed to run despite his unacceptable stance against basic human rights. It is disturbing that he passed the vetting process of the PCs under the watch of their Leader Ches Crosbie.

New Democrats will always stand up for human rights.

As the Leader of the NL NDP, I reaffirm my commitment to fight for equality and dignity for all. I reaffirm my commitment to defend women’s right to choose, to stand up for LGBTQ2+ rights and to fight against all forms of discrimination in our province.

We must be resolute in denouncing all violations to our inalienable human rights.

Freedom, equality, justice, and human dignity can never be taken for granted.”
