NDP Leader Jim Dinn (St. John’s Centre) says workers need stronger protections to stay safe on the job, and that government must make worker safety a priority.
“Every worker deserves to go to work knowing they’ll come home safe,” said Dinn. “To mark May Day, the NDP Caucus is putting forward concrete steps we will take to improve workplace safety for all workers. These steps include hiring more Occupational Health and Safety (OHS) inspectors, publishing workplace inspection reports online to increase transparency and accountability, and more.”
The NDP’s commitments include:
Increasing the Income Replacement Rate (IRR) for injured workers to 90%, recognizing the financial stress of being hurt on the job.
Establishing a dedicated Occupational Health and Safety (OHS) Clinic to support healthy, safe workplaces and early interventions.
Hiring more OHS inspectors, especially to monitor smaller worksites that are often overlooked.
Publishing all workplace health and safety inspections on the Government of NL website to increase transparency and accountability.
“These aren’t new ideas. Workers, unions, and advocates have pushed for them for years,” said Dinn. “When people offer real solutions to protect workers, government must listen. By acting on these long-ignored calls, we will put workers’ safety first, something this government has refused to do.”
Dinn pointed to Labrador West as a clear example of government failure.
“We see the consequences of inaction in Labrador West, where the government continues to delay a dust study that should happen every ten years,” said Dinn. “Workers and residents face ongoing exposure to harmful silica dust. Regular monitoring isn’t optional, it’s essential.”
“An NDP government will put workers’ rights and safety where they belong: at the top of the agenda. Workers and their families deserve nothing less.”
