NL NDP MHA for Labrador West, Jordan Brown, is calling on the provincial government to re-introduce the HST break on home heating. This action will bring permanent relief to people trying to heat their homes.
“Heating your home is a necessity, not a luxury. However, this government charges HST on both home heating fuels and residential electricity,” said Brown. “With the added burden of the ongoing recession, people need long term solutions not one-off announcements like we have seen from this government.”
The NL NDP called for the removal of HST from home heating as far back as 2011. The 8% HST was removed for home heating oil and residential electricity that year, but was re-introduced in the 2015 provincial budget.
“HST removal has been done before and brought immediate relief to people in this province. No forms had to be submitted, people didn’t have to worry about what happens if their address changes,” said Brown. “In the upcoming budget we’ll be looking for investments that are long term and bring relief without adding barriers for people across this province struggling to make ends meet.”
