Updated: Dec 3, 2018

The provincial NDP Executive has named Lorraine Michael, MHA for St. John’s East-Quidi Vidi, Interim Leader of the NDP. Michael accepted the role at the request of the Executive.

Michael has been an active member of the NDP since the 1970s. She was elected Leader of the NL NDP in May 2006 and elected MHA for Signal Hill-Quidi Vidi in November 2006, re-elected in 2007 and 2011, and most recently elected as the MHA for the new district of St. John’s East-Quidi Vidi in November 2015. Michael served as Leader of the NL NDP from 2006-2015.

Earle McCurdy was elected Leader of the NL NDP in March 2015. McCurdy announced last week that he is stepping down as Leader effective at the end of September. Michael will serve as Interim Leader until a new Leader is in place.

NL NDP President Mark Gruchy thanked Michael for agreeing to take on the role of Interim Leader. “We’re fortunate to have someone with her Parliamentary and leadership experience to lead the party as we go through the democratic process of electing a new Leader,” Gruchy said.

The NL NDP Executive has established a Leadership Convention planning committee to work on communications, procedures, and other matters related to preparation for the Convention. Further information and details will be released in the coming weeks.
