For Immediate Release

NDP Leader Jim Dinn is calling for an independent inquiry into the explosion at the refinery in Come By Chance where one worker lost his life and nine more were injured.
“We are calling on the provincial government to launch an independent public inquiry to investigate for systemic failure. Workplace accidents are preventable.
“People deserve to know why certain decisions were taken, what mistakes were made and if the companies and government acted appropriately. It’s the best way to ensure no stone is left unturned as we look for answers that could prevent another tragedy.
“We raised concerns about OHS in the province most recently in June after the Auditor General released a report that revealed that at least one-quarter of OHS investigations surveyed weren't finished before that two-year deadline elapsed, ‘thereby precluding the option for prosecution,’ and even when charges were being laid, it was often happening at the last minute.
“The primary goal of the Occupational Health and Safety Division is accident and illness prevention. As government continues to promote industry, we must to ensure accountability and transparency for workers.
“We want to extend my condolences again to those who were injured and to the family of Shawn Peddle. Workers' health and safety must be the top priority. It is workers and their communities that pay the price when government is not paying attention. We must have an inquiry. Newfoundlanders and Labradorians deserve no less.”
