As the House of Assembly closes for this session, NL NDP Leader Jim Dinn (St. John’s Centre) says that the people of Newfoundland and Labrador continue to feel the struggle of multiple crises, including housing, cost of living, and healthcare.

Dinn called this session a disappointment, highlighting that the budget was a “stay-the-course” budget, and showed the lack of understanding from the Liberal government about how people in this province are struggling.

“After seven days of becoming Premier, Hogan closed the House of Assembly early. With so much going on in our province, and the world, right now, I have to question if the Premier really understands how people are struggling,” said Dinn. “If he did, we would be in the House talking about implementing rent controls, removing the HST from all forms of home heating, raising minimum wage, or having meaningful conversations on how to push basic income.

“This session, the NDP highlighted governments increased spending on shelters, which has ballooned to approx. $12 million a year, and travel nurses, with government spending $139 million alone in the past 12 months,” Dinn added. “The cost of food is still high, we have one of the highest rates in child hunger, seniors are being evicted from their homes with no where to go. It is time to get to work, not the other way around.”

Dinn says that the House could have stayed open to pass crucial legislation, but the Liberal’s do not have the political will to do the work necessary.

“Whether it was establishing a disability advocate or bringing in the legislation to remove the sugar tax, there was work yet to be done,” Dinn said. “We were prepared to stay in the House of Assembly and get this work done for the people of the province, unlike government.”

Dinn highlighted the unanimous support for the NDP PMR on increased access to intraprovincial travel for Labradorians as a win, but says he is waiting to see action.

“I, MHA Brown, and truly all Labradorians applaud government for recognizing this urgent issue, but now we all wait and see how government will actually move forward on this.”
