NDP MHA Jordan Brown (Labrador West) is calling on government to take action and remove the provincial portion of the HST on home heating, including residential electricity and other home heating fuels. With 77% of people in the province living paycheque to paycheque, Brown says this would immediately help all Newfoundlanders and Labradorians struggling to make ends meet.
“77 per cent of people in this province reported they are living paycheque to paycheque. The provincial government need to act immediately before home heating costs increase heading into winter,” says Brown. “Heating your home is a matter of survival; it’s not a luxury to be taxed. Removing the provincial portion of the HST off of home heating would immediately help every household in this province and keep money in their pockets this winter to pay increased food and rental costs.”
Brown calls the government’s temporary pause on the carbon tax on home heating a half measure that does not go far enough. Newfoundland and Labrador had previously removed tax on home heating after NDP MHAs pressured government to act.
“Pausing the carbon tax is another temporarily measure and will continue to treat home heating as a luxury in this province,” Brown says. “This government spent over $200 million on a one-time cost of living cheque – that could have been years of savings on home heating costs for households.”
