NDP MHA for Labrador West Jordan Brown is demanding government to stop neglecting the health and safety of workers and residents in the district and immediately start the dust study.
In 2000, a study on the effects of silica dust in iron ore mining called for a follow-up within a decade. Instead, the then-Conservative government ignored the warning and failed to act. It wasn’t until 2013, under pressure from the NDP, that a new study was finally conducted. Now, Brown is demanding government not only launch another immediate assessment, but commit to conducting these studies every ten years to protect workers’ health and safety.
“I shouldn’t have to fight for basic health and safety protections for workers in Labrador West,” said Brown. “The fact that government hasn’t committed to a new study, nor has a plan to conduct these essential reviews every ten years, shows just how willing they are to neglect the health of workers and residents in this region.”
Brown wrote the Minister in February urging government to act immediately to get this review started. He has not received a response.
“Given the increasing awareness of the health risks associated with airborne particulate matter, it is vital to ensure that environmental standards in Labrador West remain in line with the best available science and the needs of the community,” Brown wrote.
Brown emphasizes that industry in Labrador West plays a vital role in building strong communities and providing good, unionized jobs. But he insists it's the government’s responsibility to ensure companies meet health standards, so workers and residents aren’t forced to live and work in unsafe, unhealthy environments.
“I urge government to prioritize this review and to engage with local stakeholders, including residents, health professionals, and United Steelworkers, to ensure that all relevant data is considered. I am confident that a thorough reassessment will help foster a safer, healthier future for Labrador West.”
