Government Inaction Leaving Labradorians Out in the Cold

For Immediate Release

February 6, 2025

NDP MHA Jordan Brown (Labrador West) is demanding government to take immediate action to address the growing housing crisis in the district, as reports emerge of landlords forcing out long-term tenants to take advantage of higher rental payments from fly-in fly-out (FIFO) workers.

“This week I was made aware of a case where a senior renting an apartment was told they have to leave because the landlord wants to charge higher rent to companies housing FIFO workers. The senior now is worried they will not be able to find an affordable place to live,” said Brown. “This is exactly what happens when government refuses to invest in affordable housing. They have allowed the market to run unchecked, and now vulnerable residents are paying the price.”

With Labrador West poised for a boom in workers over the next few years, Brown warns that more renters could face eviction with nowhere to turn unless immediate action is taken.

“Labrador West is a hub for industry and resources, and I’ve been calling on government to invest in the district—not just with infrastructure and jobs, but with housing that keeps communities strong,” said Brown. “Instead, they’ve done nothing, and now we’re seeing the consequences.”

Brown continues to urge the government to implement policies that protect renters, build more non-market community housing at affordable rates, and ensure that Labrador West remains a community where people can live and work—not just a temporary stop for FIFO workers.

“The province must step up now to ensure that longtime residents and workers have stable and affordable housing,” said Brown. “If they continue to sit on their hands, more people will be displaced, and our communities will suffer.”

Brown is calling for immediate investment in affordable housing initiatives, stronger rent control measures, and an urgent plan to support tenants facing eviction due to rental market pressures.
