Failure to Address Workplace Conditions Causing Medical Diversions

Updated: Jan 30, 2023

For Immediate Release

16 December, 2022

MHA for Torngat Mountains, Lela Evans, responding to a public service announcement released late Friday afternoon by Labrador Grenfell Health announcing that medical diversions would be taking place for a number of weeks. This comes while more emergency rooms across the province were closed this week.

“I am deeply concerned about this situation,” said Evans. “The healthcare workers who are currently in our public healthcare system are doing their best under difficult circumstances, but the provincial government must begin to improve the state of our healthcare instead of just talking about it. It is a nightmare right now and without real action lives could be lost or left broken.”

Evans is frustrated that the continued government inaction on the comprehensive human resources plan for health is putting pressures on workers that is fueling the critical nursing shortage across the province.

“The government cannot be left off the hook for their lack of planning and failure to meet this crisis head on.”
