Tomorrow, a new premier will be announced in Newfoundland and Labrador, and NDP Leader Jim Dinn (St. John’s Centre) says that whoever takes on the role must listen and deliver.

Dinn says the people of this province are tired of empty promises and deserve a government that will listen, respond, and act on the urgent issues they face every day.

“The people who I talk to tell me clearly that they feel this Liberal government does not understand or listen to the issues they face,” said Dinn. “There is a history with this government of fancy words being used to cover the lack of meaningful action. These things must be a priority, first and foremost.

“One simple but important action the new premier can take is signing onto the federal Pharmacare program. Thanks to the NDP, Canadians are starting to see real coverage, like insulin and birth control, but our provincial government hasn’t shown any interest in securing that for people here. That needs to change.

“I know both candidates for premier say they understand what people are going through, but I have to wonder if they truly do,” said Dinn. “One spent almost $60,000 of public money to forcibly remove people from Tent City, some with nowhere else to go. The other has argued that survivors of sexual assault cannot be traumatized by the court system, which is simply and dangerously untrue.

“I sincerely hope the next premier will act immediately to make life better for people across this province. That starts with really listening to the concerns and solutions people are bringing forward,” Dinn continued. “The NDP has proposed strong, practical policies that would help, such as removing the HST from all forms of home heating, implementing a livable minimum wage, introducing rent control to address skyrocketing rental costs, and more. These are achievable goals that we are fighting for.

“We do better when the people around us are doing better,” Dinn concluded. “Whoever becomes the next premier must be ready to listen, understand the real challenges people are facing, and focus on real solutions, not flashy announcements or marketing spins.”
