Today in the House of Assembly, NL NDP Leader Jim Dinn (St. John’s Centre) pressed government on key issues facing post-secondary education.
Dinn challenged government on their decision to lift the tuition freeze from Memorial University, marking how it has not only created more hardship for students and impacting the University. “Memorial University graduates are our doctors, our teachers, our nurses, our future. Yet this government has repeatedly withheld funding to this valuable resource,” Dinn said.
The MUN Student’s Union have showcased the lack of investment in maintenance, sharing photos of ceilings caving in and hazardous conditions throughout university buildings. “I ask the Premier, Will he restore funding to Memorial University so it can address the $481 million in deferred maintenance created by his governments cuts?” he asked.
After meeting with the Mun Campus Coalition, Dinn learned that class sizes are increasing, course offerings are reduced, and that there’s discussion about eliminating exam booklets and requiring students to bring their own paper. Dinn asked the Premier, “Does he think this is appropriate?”
The NL NDP continues to call for the tuition freeze to be brought back, and more investments, such as paid work terms for all students.
