Because They Were Women: Statement from Jim Dinn

For Immediate Release

6 December, 2022

“On December 6, 1989 14 young women at École Polytechnique were killed because they were women. We honour and remember them. Their bright futures were stolen and their families were left to forever feel their loss.

“We must work to build a better province where women and girls can live without fear or violence.

“The intake statistics from April to September of this year for Iris Kirby House, a shelter for women fleeing domestic abuse, are jarring:

· Admissions: 74 (24 family admissions)

· Turn aways: 211

· Distress Calls: 527

We know that the rising cost of living and the housing shortage is putting pressure on families. We call on government to increase funding to shelters, housing and transition houses and ensure women fleeing violence can find safe shelter.”

NL NDP Leader and MHA for St. John’s Centre will be attending the vigil for those lost to the massacre de Montreal.

The vigil will take place on Tuesday, Dec. 6, at 6 p.m. in the MUNL Engineering building’s main lecture theatre (EN-2006).
