NL NDP Leader and MHA for St. John’s Centre Jim Dinn was pleased to hear that joint funding from the provincial and federal governments will be invested to start to address housing shortages that people across this province are facing.
“These 132 affordable housing units will certainly be of some help to the over 2000 individuals that the Gathering Place alone services per year in St. John’s,” Dinn said. “If the province can continue to focus investments in these areas, and address the growing number of NL Housing units across the province that have not been maintained leaving them unlivable, we may start to see the needle move with respect to homelessness.”
The NL NDP applauds the government for accepting that housing is a core issue people are facing. The NL NDP encourages government to continue this focus and support other initiatives outside of the Avalon Peninsula, in places like Corner Brook and across Labrador.
“It was hopeful to hear the Federal Minister announce that there were many more pockets of funding that can be leveraged to address housing issues here,” said Dinn. “Our hope is that the provincial government doesn’t see this announcement as fully addressing the housing issues across the province, and that they leverage the funding that is said to be available so that all people have a stable place to call home.”
