The NDP Caucus is looking for support from other members of the House of Assembly for a Private Member’s Motion urging government to create an all-party Select Committee on Jobs to address the growing unemployment crisis in Newfoundland and Labrador.
Leader Gerry Rogers (MHA, St. John’s Centre) will introduce the motion today after Question Period in the House of Assembly. St. John’s East-Quidi Vidi MHA Lorraine Michael will second the motion.
The motion reads, “Be it resolved that the House of Assembly urge Government to create an all-party Select Committee on Jobs to address the growing unemployment crisis in Newfoundland and Labrador.”
A copy of the full motion is attached and available below.
While national unemployment has reached a record low, Newfoundland and Labrador’s unemployment rate of 14.8 per cent in 2017 was twice the national average. Furthermore, the R8 unemployment rate is growing closer to 20 per cent taking into account those who have given up looking for work or are underemployed.
The NDP Caucus stresses the success of previous all-party committees on Northern shrimp and mental health and addictions.
