The Newfoundland and Labrador New Democratic Party (NL NDP) is proud to announce that Sheilagh O’Leary has been officially nominated as the party’s candidate in St. John’s East-Quidi Vidi for the 2025 provincial election.

Sheilagh O’Leary is a St. John’s-based artist, producer, and longtime volunteer and advocate. With a background in visual media, community leadership, and public service, she has spent over three decades advocating for inclusion, environmental stewardship, and mental health. O’Leary has served St. John’s City Council for 14 years. As Deputy Mayor of St. John’s, she has been passionate about building strong, resilient communities.

From a passion for the environment, leading volunteer cleanups in her community, to championing inclusive politics through her roles as co-chair of Equal Voice NL and founding chair of the Municipalities NL Women’s Caucus, O’Leary has a strong record of standing up for people. For her, the choice is clear—the NL NDP is the team that shares her values and vision for real change.

“For me, choosing to run with the NL NDP was about aligning my values with action. I’ve spent my life fighting for equity, the environment, and community—this team shares that vision. It wasn’t a hard decision. It felt like coming home,” said O’Leary. “My heart will always be with the residents of St. John’s East-Quidi Vidi, and the beautiful community we have here. I am more than ready to stand up and be the strong voice they deserve in the House of Assembly.”

NL NDP Leader Jim Dinn is excited to welcome O’Leary to the NL NDP team, and highlights her deep commitment to her community, her constituents, and to the overall wellbeing of the province.

“We’re thrilled to have Sheilagh O’Leary running for the NL NDP. She’s a proven leader who delivers results,” said Dinn. “The people of St. John’s East-Quidi Vidi are ready to have their NDP voice back—fighting for action on the cost of living, affordable housing, and public healthcare.”
