NDP Leader Jim Dinn (St. John’s Centre) continued to challenge government today on their plan to relocate adult gynecological services from the Health Sciences Centre to the Janeway Children’s Hospital, a move which has left healthcare professionals in the Janeway frustrated due to the lack of any consultation.
Dinn highlighted a 30-page report that was crafted by Janeway pediatricians and pediatric sub-specialists in response to this news and the lack of consultation with any doctor or professional at the Janeway Hospital. The Minister responded to Dinn last week saying there was no plans, concrete or otherwise, for this move, but Dinn points out that $3 million has been allocated in the budget for the move.
“Obviously NL Health Services communicated something different to pediatricians since they found it necessary to write a 30-page response in which they state that the proposal was made without any prior consultation with pediatric clinical leadership, families, or the community,” Dinn said. “I ask the Minister, why was there no prior consultation?”
The report, entitled “Preserve, Protect, Prioritize: Ensuring Specialized Pediatric Care at the Janeway,” urges NL Health Services to immediately pause any implementation of the proposed integration of adult inpatient services within the Janeway. Dinn says this shows just how frustrated these health care professionals are with the lack of consultation from government.
“I ask the Minister will he halt the implementation of the integration until thorough consultation takes place with families, the community, and the healthcare professionals at the Janeway?”
