The Newfoundland and Labrador New Democratic Party has released the rules and deadlines for the upcoming leadership contest.

The NL NDP Provincial Executive has appointed lawyer Kyle Rees as Chief Electoral Officer (CEO). Rees will oversee the process of the leadership contest.

“We are committed to an open, transparent, and democratic process for this leadership contest. While this contest was not planned, we have a dedicated team engaged to lead the process,” said NL NDP President Lynn Moore. “I am confident we’ll be stronger, energized, and ready to increase our strength and reach in 2019.”

Leadership candidates must be NL NDP members in good standing, as defined by Article 4 of the Constitution of the Party, and must meet the following requirements:

  • Complete and submit the Leadership Candidate Nomination Package duly signed by 20 NL NDP members in good standing from a minimum of five electoral districts. At least 10 nominators must be people of marginalized genders.

  • Submit by email a high resolution headshot photo (as a .jpeg attachment) and short biographical statement, written in the third person and up to 250 words (as a Word document attachment.)

  • Pay a non-refundable fee of $1,000 at time of application as a leadership candidate.

The deadline for receipt of leadership candidate applications in order to appear on the leadership contest ballot is 5:00 p.m. NL time Friday, March 1, 2019.

All those who are approved party members by 5:00 p.m. NL time on Sunday, March 10, 2019, are eligible to cast a ballot in the leadership contest. All memberships valid on the cut-off date will receive voting credentials.

Voting will be one-member, one-vote ballot. Voting will open on March 13, 2019 and close at 5:00 p.m. NL time on March 16, 2019.

Voting will take place online or by telephone for those who do not have email.
