NL NDP Leader Jim Dinn (St. John’s Centre) is slamming the Liberal government today following a scathing Auditor General (AG) report that exposes the extent to which public healthcare dollars have been funneled into the pockets of private nursing agencies, with little oversight, accountability, or benefit to the people of Newfoundland and Labrador. In 2023, NDP MHA Jordan Brown formally requested that the AG investigate the contracts awarded to private nursing agencies, raising serious concerns about skyrocketing costs and a lack of transparency. The AG’s findings confirmed the NDP’s fears: government’s failure to conduct basic due diligence has cost taxpayers millions, in some cases paying for services that can’t even be verified as delivered.
“This report is appalling—full stop,” said Dinn. “While frontline healthcare workers are crying out for support, this government has been pouring millions of public dollars into private, for-profit companies without even doing basic due diligence. Public casual nurses were given less hours to make way for travel nurses. This is disgraceful.
“I can only imagine how nurses and other healthcare workers are feeling—overworked, denied time off, and burned out, all while companies get rich off our healthcare dollars. People are still waiting for family doctors or stuck on years-long waitlists for basic procedures. This isn’t just a failure of policy. It’s a slap in the face to the very people holding our public healthcare system together.”
He calls for an investigation into how this was allowed to happen under governments watch, specifically in relation to the company the AG titles “Agency A.”
“When the AG says that there was potential fraud happening, it’s time for the RNC to investigate,” said Dinn. “Being reimbursed for non-reimbursable expenses, renting electric vehicles for nurses who did not appear to have the vehicle, or for nurses who were not even in the province, this must be investigated.
“This Liberal government is asleep at the wheel, and their solution of throwing money at private companies instead of supporting our public healthcare system has worsened the healthcare crisis for people in this province.”
