NL NDP Leader Jim Dinn (St. John’s Centre) expresses his concern over the departure of a member of the Churchill Falls MOU oversight committee back in May. Dinn immediately calls on Premier Hogan to release the un-redacted version of the letter of resignation, stating that transparency must be at the forefront, and this must be addressed.
During the special MOU debate in the House of Assembly, the NDP pushed back against Liberals—securing the creation of the oversight committee to ensure transparency for Newfoundlanders and Labradorians. Now, Dinn says the very transparency that committee was meant to deliver is being called into question.
It’s deeply troubling to read Mr. Wilson’s letter and see the lack of confidence in this committee’s transparency and procedures,” said Dinn. “This is not the committee we fought for—one that was supposed to provide clear presentations in the House of Assembly and to the public on the details of the MOU and negotiations.”
“I’m left asking: what happened? What changed to force Mr. Wilson to step down-just days after the Premier was sworn in? Is this Premier Hogan’s plan: to weaken transparency and shut down accountability?” Dinn asked. “We’ve already heard Hogan call the MOU the election issue, which is not only tone-deaf, but dismissive of the many challenges people in this province face, especially as an actual deal and the conditions have not been written yet. When a committee designed for transparency isn’t allowed to be transparent, the alarm bells start ringing.”
“From day one, the NDP has been clear: this committee must be independent, accountable, and able to provide real answers to the public. This was never about political theatre-it was about securing the best possible deal for Newfoundlanders and Labradorians. Right now, that work is being undermined.”
“That’s why I’m calling on the Premier to release Mr. Wilson’s letter in full, unredacted, to prove there was no political interference from him. The public deserves to know the truth. Government must be held accountable for fixing these problems and ensuring this committee delivers on its purpose—true transparency and real details about the MOU. Newfoundlanders and Labradorians deserve better than more secrecy from this government.”
