REALITY CHECK: Liberals Float Privatizing Memorial University at MUN Debate

Bernard Davis, Liberal Candidate for Virginia Waters-Pleasantville floated the idea of privatizing MUN during the debate held at MUN on September 24, 2025

When asked about the current and future state of MUN, Bernie Davis – with his Liberal talking points laid out in front of him – had some interesting ideas. He claimed MUN should be working with private colleges.

“When it comes to expansion we need to explore options. Including partnerships between private colleges,” said Bernie Davis, at minute 19:30 of the debate. Davis went on to bring up private colleges 3 more times during the debate.

It’s no wonder Davis was championing private colleges. Private colleges have contributed $38,000 to the Liberal campaign since they formed government. No wonder the candidate for Virginia Waters- Pleasantville brought them into the equation on multiple occasions during the debate.

NDP Candidate for Mount Scio Laurabel Mba pressed Davis on the issue, “I have a question for the Minister. Why do people attend private institutions?” She asked, “It is because people feel they can not get what they need from a public institution. If you have a well funded university, a well funded education system, then there is absolutely no need for a private system. A well funded public system enables equal access for everyone.”
