NDP MHA Jordan Brown (Labrador West) is demanding the government take real action on the disturbing findings in the Auditor General’s report on Personal Care Homes (PCH) by bringing both PCHs and home care under the public health system.

Brown points to the importance of aging well at home, outlined in Health Accord NL, and highlights how difficult it is for seniors in Labrador West to stay in their communities with their loved ones.

“Seniors in Labrador West want to remain in their community. It is critical for them and the wellbeing of our town,” Brown said. “To remain at home, they often need some help with personal care and home care. Labrador West has no assisted living and no personal care homes.”

Brown highlights the wide range of issues raised by the Auditor General in her reports on Personal Care Homes and long-term care, stressing that government must take meaningful action to ensure seniors get the care they need.

“We continue to see important reports dealing with seniors needs in this province.

These reports have shown us the extent of work that needs to be done.

The recent AG report on Personal Care Homes revealed serious incidents like deaths, missing residents, verbal and sexual abuse,” Brown says. “Integrating personal care and home care into the public system would help make our piecemeal system whole.”

Brown asked the Minister, “When will this government bring home care and personal care workers into our public system, especially given that Labrador West cannot attract either of them?”
