NDP MHA Jordan Brown (Labrador West) says the provincial Liberal government continues to fail Labrador West, pointing out that in a decade of power, they have not built a single affordable housing unit.
Despite repeated calls from residents and consistent advocacy from Brown, no affordable units have been built in the district. Brown says the government is failing and forgetting the people of Labrador West.
“How long must the people of Labrador West push the government to act on the housing crisis, which is gravely impacting our communities? Government says they are acting, but we have seen nothing,” Brown said. We are getting two new NL Housing units, and replacing two that burned down, meaning we will have only two more than before. Construction on these units has not begun, even though it’s been announced in 3 different budgets.
“We still don’t have secured funding for affordable senior housing units. Seniors are being forced out of rental units to make way for landlords profiting from fly-in, fly-out workers, yet government refuses to introduce rent controls or strengthen the Residential Tenancies Act. There is nothing to cut red tape for municipalities. It’s beyond frustrating.”
Brown says that while the province continues to look to the federal government for solutions, proposals, including those for seniors housing, have been consistently turned down.
“When will the Liberal government actually start building houses in Labrador West? They continue to talk about the federal government stepping in, but what are they doing? Nothing,” Brown says. “The provincial government has a responsibility to the people of Labrador West to act, not pawn them off on the federal government, yet they still shift the responsibility onto everyone else but themselves.
“The lack of housing in Labrador West is preventing the district from growing and expanding as it should. From workers to seniors to young families, the need for housing has never been greater, and the government must build houses. Labradorians deserve better, I won’t stop fighting until the housing crisis is solved.”
